How games will change the world
BBC News – May 28, 2008
And as the population becomes ever more game literate there’s less and less reason to rely on the old-fashioned inert interfaces that so many psychometric tests require. So say your CV and your performance in Battlefield: Office Combat pass muster. In the future there’s no reason that what’s waiting for you at your desk on your first day won’t be a game. More and more we’re finding that game mechanics and game presentation can make otherwise difficult or tedious tasks more palatable… In the future there’s no reason that what’s waiting for you at your desk on your first day won’t be a game. More and more we’re finding that game mechanics and game presentation can make otherwise difficult or tedious tasks more palatable. The pioneer in this field was The ESP Game which uses an online game mechanic to coax human players into labelling pictures for image-based search engines. Great successIts great success has produced a stream of similar projects not least the cluster of word and image based games now housed at Carnegie Mellon’s Gawp. Projects like the Firefox plug-in PMOG show how the application of tried and tested gaming incentives – experience points levels medals – can change how people interact with software they use for work every day. Similar projects to make e-mail management more playful are also underway. FoldIt uses a graphical gloss and high-score hunger to lure ignorant oafs like me into spending an hour on some cutting-edge bio-chemical research we wouldn’t otherwise be qualified for.

Conan And Haze Fail To Topple GTA IV In UK Charts
Gamasutra – May 28, 2008
Usual chart companion Wii Fit has almost entirely run out of stock this week though with the game falling from third place to number forty. The highest new entry of the week is Funcom’s massively multiplayer online game Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures at number three. Published in the UK by Eidos Interactive the game enjoyed the biggest launch for a PC title this year in the UK.

Battle of the Video Game Bands
BusinessWeek – May 28, 2008
Using a specialized producing tool you can insert guitar bass and drum tracks for play in the game which the game synthesizes using rhythm counters. Unfortunately due to song copyright laws you cannot record vocals although Activision may find a way around that issue in the final release. This should swing the doors to the Guitar Hero online community wide open letting users share songs with others and giving the game abundant downloadable content. On top of being able to create your own tracks you can also customize your Guitar Hero characters your band’s logo and even your album covers. Besides the possibilities of creating your own song list Guitar Hero: World Tour will also contain various licensed tracks by original artists. Although specific tracks have yet to be revealed you can expect to jam out to songs by Van Halen Linkin Park the Eagles and Sublime among others. We’re guessing that popular songs like “Panama” “Victim of Love” and “One Step Closer (Break)” will be in there since they’re more popular tracks.
