E3: BattleForge bombed at retail but booms as online game
Los Angeles Times
"We had great respect for the developers but we had to decide whether we needed to shut down the studio. "The company met with Phenomic in April to break the bad news. Soon thereafter other developers at EA noticed that the few people who bought the title were spending a large amount of money online buying virtual cards that EA sold in the game. These Pokemon-like cards conferred game characters with special skills that can be used to play the game. "The average spending per user was off the charts" Gibeau said. "If you got someone to play the game they became passionate about it. "Gibeau made a radical call — he decided to give away BattleForge or at least a big chunk of it and reserved some levels and features to sell to players.
A brief history of downloadable console games

The only problem was that once the consumer bought the game that was the end of the revenue stream for the publisher. Then GameLine came along. This third-party game download service from Control Video (which later became America nline) worked with multiple game consoles and would let users download new games through a telephone line connected directly to a special cartridge. It would then limit gameplay to a certain number of plays that users would have to prebuy. Despite GameLine’s innovative approach to game distribution it had two big problems. The first is that it never got big game publishers on board meaning that users were paying big money for smaller titles that weren’t available at retail. It also came out the same year as the video game crash of 1983 when most of the hardware vendors and software-publishing houses were going bankrupt.

ther members can then work with the art allowing users to colloborate to create art or to spontaneously create pieces in a collaborative process. “Neo Steam” hasn’t launched yet — it’s playable in the open beta but nothing can be purchased — but the strong focus on community is reminiscent of Nexon. You know the company that brought “MapleStory” to America put gift cards for online game communities into stores and then proceeded to make absolutely insane amounts of money. It’s too early to say if “Neo Steam” will be a small MM to emulate but it’s certainly worth watching. If it does well it will be one more strong argument for better integrating the community’s communications its outside interests and its game; after all if Facebook YouTube and WoW all keep people addicted wouldn’t it follow that a company offering all three would have that much more market synergy?Share this post:.

“Whether you have 10 minutes on your PC in the office or hours on your Mac at home this is a golf game that makes time for you” Taramykin said of the video game which also does not require a disc. The Wall Street Journal said the new game featuring golf star Tiger Woods will be subscription-based once it is officially released in the fall. Electronic Arts Chief Executive fficer John Riccitiello said the new online game represents his company’s new stance regarding video games. “The console business at best appeals to 100 million people” Riccitiello told the Journal. “We want to make games a place to go rather than a thing to buy. © 2009 United Press International Inc. 05 2009 12:00AM EDT. jsp –>THE QUESTINMy husband and I like to play online games (MMRPGs) together. Several months ago another player he did not know (a woman) asked him for help with a mission because he was at the highest level and she knew he’d helped others before. He did assist her and they’ve played together since. But I’m not invited to come along and she rarely speaks to me. Now they text or call each other offline too.
