Turbine offers new lure: free D&D play

of Westwood released a beta version of its first free-to-play game yesterday a move meant to draw new gamers to its Dungeons & Dragons nline franchise. Turbine known for its The Lord of the Rings nline game launched a pre-release version of its Dungeons & Dragons nline: Eberron Unlimited allowing players to test the game before the final version is released later this summer. In Dungeons & Dragons players move around a virtual world fighting characters and discovering hidden treasure. “A lot of people don’t have a lot of time to play the game. This is giving them an option” to play it for free said Adam Mersky a Turbine spokesman. The play-for-free option could pay off for Turbine.

So if it’s an MM I’d expect a more traditional multi-shard game though it’s hard to see the off-the-beaten-path-and-proud-of-it CCP making a fantasy swords n’ sorcery game like everyone else. What I can see is CCP taking pride in its Icelandic heritage (as it has been known to do in the past). Come on admit it: A Vikings nline game would be totally badass. Either way we’ll know when GDC Europe kicks off this August in Leipzig Germany.

The article goes on to say that this was Atari's intention all along when it decided to purchase Cryptic Studios. Cryptic is currently working on two games right now: Star Trek nline and Champions nline. With Atari owning both wizards of the Coast (who in turn own the old TSR Dungeons & Dragons license) and Cryptic Studios (who happens to own the Champions RPG property) it makes perfect sense to create an MM based on the popular RPG series that BioWare — and later bsidian — helped to make popular through its games and expansion packs.

It can be a bit more enjoyable to group up with friends or even strangers this way and go hunting for rogue AI drivers together. However even adding some buddies to the mix can’t disguise that there simply isn’t much to do while free-roaming. It begs the question: Why bother creating such a huge wasteland if you don’t give players much reason to explore it? Certainly no one would play a massively multiplayer online game if all you could do was jog around looking for new clothing designs. Perhaps if the driving were more exciting checking out the world would be a bit more interesting. Fuel’s driving model isn’t bad–it’s just unspectacular. Some of the vehicles are really fun to drive such as the cool-looking Deathwing quad bike or the bouncy Knightmare dune buggy. Yet while there are occasional exceptions (screaming down the side of a mountain in your Shuriken) racing doesn’t feel fast or thrilling.
